WHI Student Society
The Covid-19 epidemic has been a time of hardship, change and adjustment. For medical students it has been no different- returning to the clinical space comes with genuine fear and risk. We thought how can we help our colleagues and how can we provide solutions? We thought about their safety and we decided that we wanted to provide face shields that they can wear in the hospitals as they learn and care for patients. We found a sponsor that 3D-printed lightweight and practical shield that we could distribute to our members that need extra protection. We hope that our efforts were successful in protecting our fellow students and providing some safety during these trying times.
WHI’s PPE Response
We temporarily pivoted our focus to address the urgent PPE shortage at Wits-affiliated Hospitals. The PPE shortage was worsened by a disconnect between donors and COVID teams on the ground.
WHI built relationships and streamlined the provision of resources to areas that needed them most.
To date, WHI through our partners has orchestrated the donation of approximately 48 000 surgical masks, 6000 N95 masks, and 13000 bottles of hand sanitizer to four of Johannesburg’s largest public hospitals*.
